Character: John Proctor

Act One:

Act One first introduces John Proctor as a man who is "even tempered, and not easily led", yet the audience soon sees irony in this matter due to the fact that he had an affair with Abigail Williams, which explains that he is easily led.
Proctor is described as similar to a Godly figure which has been transformed in Salem as he is described as "respected, and even feared in Salem, has come to regard himself as a kind of fraud" which implies that the people of Salem recognize Proctor as a strong character, yet he has the ability to bring other people down.
